most metal decorative pieces come in a 1″ x 1″, 2″ x 2″,3″ x 3″, 4″ x 4″, and 6″ x 6″ sizes.

These materials are poured into Molds that have a specific design or pattern on them after they are smelted at 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nothing gives the look of rustic elegance like a patinaed pc of copper, bronze or pewter. There are several great companies out there that are producing high quality metal accent pieces right here in the U.S.. Finding the right company with the style you are looking for is the hardest part.

There are a lot of companies making resin tiles that mimic the look of the real thing due to the cost of the raw materials that it takes to make the solid products. These resin tiles cost much less and are much easier to care for since they will never rust or patina.

Here is an installation tip for both resin and metal decorative inserts. Once the material is set into your tile application and you are ready to grout, you must then place some painters tape over the face of the accent tiles to stop grout from getting into the nooks and crannies that are visible on the surface of the tiles. This will indeed save tons of time, money and headache.

Moldings are a very essential way to bring a finished look to your upscale tile installation. There are many different kinds of moldings that are necessary for different types of finishing techniques.

quarter round: this is usually a 1″ x 4″ or 1″ x 6″ piece of tile with a radius back. This is used to finish off any tile that ends on a blank wall. the purpose is to hide the exposed factory edge that is not finished.

Single bullnose: These are tiles that match the field tile that is being used. This will have one finished edge that is to be used on the perimeter of the field tile. I would use these pieces on a job where you have a budget (usually used in a commercial application)

double bullnose: This product type is used the same way as the single bullnose except that this one will have two sides that are finished so that these may be used as a corner piece. this is especially used to finish a wainscot and shower walls.

Chair rail: This is basically an upgrade from the quarter round. This is used for finishing all types of tile applications. I use this mostly on wainscots and shower walls to get that truly finished feel. In fact this molding gets it’s name because of the fact that it’s first use was in a dining room at the height of the top of a chair.

Sink Cap: This is for the edge of any counter top. Use this material to get the right amount of mud needed to give support to all sides of you counter top since a lot of people will lean and maybe even sit on top of your cabinets.

Base Board: Having a grout line where your flooring meets up with the walls in a house can have many negative affects on your overall design. This product type is meant to cover that problem up. Tile base board usually comes in 4″ x 6″ sizes and 6″ x 12″ for those houses with higher ceilings. In any luxury living home this is an absolute must!

Stone Moldings: Due to modern technology we have access to stone moldings in all profiles needed. This is a big difference from the time when all stone moldings were hand carved. Now we have a much more consistent line when these materials are installed. Not to mention the fact that since these are now mass produced and imported onto our country, we have a very good per piece price on these items.

Mosaics are an art technique whose existence dates back to over 4,000 years ago. The first mosaics were used to imitate pictures and were made of terracotta. The cone shaped pegs were inserted into a field point facing down. Being only a few millimeters round, these pieces of tesserea, gave the adaptable properties needed to create definition and color.

In Italy they used cubes of stone, terracotta and glass to create magnificent mosaic murals of landscapes and other designs that imitated life. The Romans usually celebrated their gods and used geometric shapes in most of their unique hand crafted creations.

In modern times these timeless methods have evolved into something most people can afford. With today’s technology mosaics are mass produced and imported into the U.S. to be sold to homeowners and home builders across the nation. When you are stumped on choosing an accent piece for your shower, bathroom floor or kitchen backsplash, you can always have a custom made mosaic produced just for you. You just need to know where to look to find a skilled professional in that trade.

Now there are several types of mosaics out there to choose from, which shows the worth of this product types versatility when using it for any design.

Glass mosaics:

If you are looking to show an interior that says high end luxury, then you want to use an Italian made hand crafted glass mosaic. Glass mosiac can be used almost anywhere, this very dense and very hard
material can be applied anywhere from the floor all the way to use in the swimming pool. When you can’t find that special mural or design for your backsplash there is always the timeless beauty of a glass mosaic.

There are many different styles of glass mosaic making it one of the most versitile materials to design with. These mosaics can play a crucial part of design using stone and tile. Glass mosaics are great for all shower floor applications since they have mostly grout lines, the material ends up having anti-slip properties.

Keep your eye out for the newest edition to glass mosaic in the U.S.. Mirror glass is here and it is the best solution for a bar area or working with an ultra modern interior design.

Stone Mosaics:

Marble, granite, travertine, limestone and slate. All of these stones are cut down and glued onto a nylon mesh ready to be installed by the square foot. This makes usinga mosaic application much more affordable by reducingthe amount of labor involved with placing small pieces of stone.

You can use this material pretty much anywhere you like. I love to see it used in as many different ways possible, including uses on archways, large bare walls, showers, counter tops, powder room floors and yes even on the ceiling of a formal sitting room.

With so many colors and finishes to choose from, it is no wonder why the use of stone mosaics has been becoming so poplular in houses all over the country. Just be sure to use proper maintenancetechniques and the right products to clean and seal your material or your beautiful artwork won’t have much of a lifespan. So be sure to do your research, and be sure to email us with any questions you may have reguarding stone or tile.

Porcelain Mosaics:

Another popular form of mosaic is porcelain. This low maintenance product is perfect for showers. Another great place to put this material to use is in the swimming pool. Since a high fired porcelain tile is only able to absorb such a little amount of water it will hold up under the conditions of being completely submerged in hydrogen. This is also a good product for use on a kithcn backsplash since it cannot stain.

This is one of the key elements to be used when it comes to creating a contemporary environment. This sleek dark material is one of value due to it’s ease of maintenance and color consistency. These properties will establish the clean simplicity required to get a real mod look, as well as compliment all surrounding colors.

Made from volcanic rock (lava), this material has a hardness level superior to stones such as marble, limestone and travertine that is a common flooring material used in today’s homes. In fact this stone is almost as hard as diamonds! Basalt comes in many different finishes and sizes, making it easy to correlate into any area of interior design.

A polished surface may cost more and require more overall maintenance, but the end result is the most sophisticated sheen with the cleanest looking lines. This cosmopolitan look is great for main flooring areas, walls, counter tops, showers, and pretty much anywhere else you can imagine. There are many mosaics and smaller sizes that work great even for a kitchen back splash. The only thing about a polished material is that it is very slippery and is not to be used outside and especially not around a pool!

Then you have a honed finish, a more rustic concrete look. Typically a honed surface is going to show less wear over time. Since this stone is so hard it is almost impossible to scratch, making the honed surface just as good of a finish as any when it comes to Basalt.

For more architectural uses, there are many more finishes that can demonstrate a rustic element in certain designs. There are chiseled panels that can be utilized for wall applications as well a the hammered, flamed, and combed surfaces. All of these finishes bring the greatly needed but subtle contrast in texture when working with such a droning color like gray.

As for use outside and wet areas, available you will find all the necessary brush style finishes. This is important to battle against dangerous areas where one has a good chance of slipping.

The sizes that you can get Basalt in ranges from little 5/8″ squares all the way up to slabs that are imported in 55″ x 80″ sizes and are 3/4″ thick. This is one more way that basalt stone shows it’s versatility within the design community. Use in the kitchen is almost a must since this stone pays a great tribute to the widely implemented stainless steel appliances that are being used today.

If you have been looking for this material please feel free to give us a call. We will be able to help you find these products in your area. Please see the contact us page.

The first part to maintaining stone is understanding what you have. A high polish material such as marble will need a completely different process than say granite. Heavy textures fair best with sealant as do most stone. The heavy grains in some product make for a perfect slip resistant surface and is ideal for patio and pool applications. You generally find polished and decorative stone set vertical for the simple fact that it is easier to maintain the polish if it is not being worn.

Slate is a very fine grained metamorphic stone that forms when clay, sedimentary rock shale and sometimes quartz. Slate comes in a large variety of color, over 30 in fact. It is usually black grey or green in color but also has many other variations.

Today’s slate applications range from using the material as cladding on the face of a building to being used as a complimentary touch to a kitchen backsplash. This is a very common architectural element as well as a major contributor for any landscape design. The best fitting style for these products is contemporary design. You can accomplish a sleek clean look or even get random more abstract modern design with a wider color variation.

Almost any look or style can be acquired by the several different types of slate products. There are sandstone materials that are usually a softer stone so you will only find them with a natural, tumbled or honed surface. Sandstone has a very consistent color variation since there is a limited mineral content. Next we have quartzite, the highest on the hardness scale of all slate products. The crystalline structure of this material makes it as resilient as granite! This materials color can hold a very well maintained continuity throughout the entire application, or if it has deposits of iron within then you can have a wide range of color. The choice you make will depend on the look you are trying to achieve.
